Black-eyed Peas and Collard Greens
A simple one pot recipe is an easy way to start your new years day.

Recipe by Chef Justin Wangler
Kendall-Jackson

Serves 8

1 lb. black-eyed peas, dried
6 oz. bacon, diced
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 Ham Hock
3½ C. low-sodium chicken broth
4 C. water
1 bay leaf
4 sprigs thyme
¼ tsp. red pepper flakes
2T salt
1 bunch Collards, washed, stems removed and sliced into 1inch strips.

Pick through beans and remove any pebbles. Rinse thoroughly. Soak beans in
6 cups cold water overnight. In a large heavy bottomed pot over medium heat,
add olive oil and bacon and cook for 2 minutes. Add onions and cook until
tender and translucent. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil,
reduce to a simmer and cook for about 30 minutes. Add collards and continue
to cook for about another 30 minutes or until beans become tender. Adjust
seasoning and serve with rice.

THE TOP TEN COMEDIC NEWS STORIES OF 2009

Okay. Here’s the deal: the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of 2009 are not to be confused with the Top Ten Legitimate News Stories of 2009. They are as different as night and day. Fire and frogs. Popeye’s chicken and ballet fundraisers. High rise condo balconies and balsa wood furniture. Southern Baptist 4th of July church picnics and snow tires. There were all sorts of heavy- duty stories that impacted the country and the planet. Can’t think of any right now, but trust me, there was a bunch. Rather, the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of 2009 are the accounts that provoked a slow shake of the head and a soft chuckle without having to bear a moral weight larger than Manitoba owing to the extreme unfunny nature of the death, destruction and gruesomeness inherent in the legitimate news. So here is the flip side, the stories from 09 most filled with mirthing possibilities. 

10. Governor Mark Sanford (R- SC) and Senator John Ensign (R- Nev) both found to have a bit of a problem in the monogamy department. The GOP breathes a sigh of relief that at least they were caught with women.

9. Beer Summit. Resolution sounded like the set up for a joke. A professor, a cop and a president walk into a bar. Because as we all know, beer fixes racism. 

8. Swine Flu. To keep from defaming our proud American factory pig farms, government attempts to change name to SOIV: Swine Originated Influenza Virus. Fails to catch on.

7. Supreme Court Justice Sonja Sotomayor. For David Souter’s replacement, the President chooses a Catholic diabetic woman from the South Bronx of Puerto Rican descent. Apparently that search for the albino midget lesbian unwed Bangladeshi mother with a bum leg and lycanthropy fell just a bit short. 

6. Cash for Clunkers. Upon first hearing about the program, many thought it was about raising the per diem for the Senate. Or a recurring entry on a lobbyist’s expense report.

5. Nobel Peace Prize. The outcry from the right made you think the President had been caught naked under a goat at a Junkie Hookers for Satan Convention. Glenn Beck so outraged, it’s a miracle he didn’t pull a Kanye West, rush the award ceremonies and yell how Dick Cheney deserved it more. 

4. Tiger Woods. Fall from Mt. Olympus is steep and loud. Maybe Nike will give Elin an endorsement deal. Who wouldn’t want to buy the clubs that beat Tiger? The two have given a whole new meaning to: “Just do it.” 

3. Somali Pirates. Who knew piracy was a 21st century career track? What’s next: scurvy? 

2. Sarah Palin. Alaska deserves decisive leadership, which is why she proved she’s not a quitter by resigning. More Sarah Logic we city folk just don’t understand. Then she writes a book that sells almost a million copies to non- readers. Queen of the Illiterati. 

1. Teabaggers and Health Care Rioters. Easy to understand why these folks are so leery of public health care when you realize how obviously they’ve been failed by our public education system.

San Francisco based political comic, Will Durst, writes sometimes, this being a sterling example, and expects 2010 to provide him with even richer grist.

They're back! Check out Steve Jaxon & the Mix this Wednesday night at Hopmonk in Sebastapol.

Back in 1982, the Mix was one of the first groups in the Bay Area to achieve huge success, with a 9 piece band featuring hot covers of the best of Motown, R&B, and funk. Other bands that followed the Mix formula include Pride and Joy and the Zazu Pitts Memorial Orchestra. The original Mix featured vocalists Gailene Grillo, Claire Victor and Tony Norman, with Steve Wolf on bass, Steve Jaxon on drums and vocals, and the amazing guitarist Steve Kimock! Now Jaxon, Grillo, and Wolf are together again, plus the Mix now features one of the top guitarists in the North Bay, Randy Quan, and veteran horn and keyboard player, Ed Randol. the new "mix" of music features more variety than ever, and beautiful four-part harmonies.

THE INTERNATIONAL

“The International” is a political thriller from Columbia Pictures. Clive Owen stars as Louis Salinger, an Interpol agent obsessed with trying to take down one the most powerful and corrupt banks in the world. He joins forces with a Manhattan assistant district attorney, Eleanor Whitman; the role is played by Naomi Watts. Salinger and Whitman risk more than their careers as their lives are on the line; the bank will stop at nothing to protect keep their interests. “The International” is very engaging, especially given the current questions surrounding banks and their spending decisions. Owen's performance is wonderful as well. It’s a pleasure to watch him portray a driven man that pushes himself way too hard. The film also showcases several memorable action scenes, particularly an exciting and beautifully realized gunfight at the Guggenheim. The story moves along quite nicely and always keeps pace. In addition, producers decided to shoot
“The International” on location in various cities across the globe. As a result, the film feels more genuine. Director, Tom Tykwer, masterfully makes moviegoers feel the tension and paranoia that his characters feel; he keeps the audience on edge.
See it.

FRIDAY THE 13TH

“Friday the 13th” is yet another remake of a classic 80’s horror film. Jason Voorhees is a legendary serial killer in the world of horror film; in fact, Horror Hound magazine rated his iconic hockey mask as the “most significant mask in horror history”. For that reason, producers needed to tread Camp Crystal Lake’s water carefully. The storyline doesn’t deviate much from the usual “Friday the 13th” films: a group of young kids travel to a vacation cabin near Camp Crystal Lake, Jason’s killing grounds. They drink. They party. Then, Jason systematically and successfully kills them, one victim at a time. To talk about this film, you need to look at it from two viewpoints; first, as a horror film and second, as a “Friday” film. From the first perspective, the film is pretty entertaining. There’s plenty of atmosphere and suspense. The director, Marcus Nispel, creates a movie that feels like an 80’s horror film. It’s filled
with trademark gore, nudity and campy one-liners like its predecessors. It all comes together to create a very nostalgic experience. But as a “Friday” film, it falls short. It’s a straight retelling of the original story. I can understand why producers chose to stick to the basics, but nothing new was introduced to further the legend or enhance the franchise. A lot of people will see this film; there’s no doubt about it. Moviegoers will have a good time, but “Friday” is just another remake.

SIDENOTE” My Bloody Valentine 3D was a much better.

CORALINE

Coraline is the new animated film based on the best selling novel by Neil Gaiman. The film is directed by Henry Selick, the filmmaker who brought us “The Nightmare before Christmas.”

Coraline is your average girl who has just moved to a new town with her parents. She misses her old friends and has a hard time keeping occupied. Unfortunately, her parents are far too busy with work to pay attention to her; and in fact, they aren’t very nice about it. Understandably, Coraline hopes for something better.

One night, she awakens from a deep sleep and finds a secret door in her living room. The door leads to an alternate world which is almost identical to her normal existence except the new reality is much, much better. Everything is fun and exciting. She also meets her alternate parents, her “Other Mother” and “Other Father”, who constantly dote on her, satisfying her every whim. This new world is perfect. Or is it?

Coraline is a well done film. Henry Selick brings his colorful and imaginative vision to the screen; the visuals are stunning and beautiful with plenty of color and bizarreness. Selick also creates a very believable young girl with Coraline and surrounds her with plenty of vivid and interesting characters. The stop motion animation is impressive and captivating. And if you see it in 3D, the new technology will only draw you deeper into this unique world. The film is dark in tone and has some frightening images so you may want to consider bringing younger children. It’s a very fun time.

PINK PANTHER 2

Steve Martin returns as the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau. Decades ago, this character was made famous by Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards. In this film, the pink panther, a priceless jewel, has been stolen. Il Tornado, the world renowned thief, is the prime suspect. As a result, Clouseau joins an international team of crime fighters to hunt down the irreplaceable treasure. The film co-stars some of Hollywood finest like Andy Garcia, John Cleese and Alfred Molina. With this A-list cast, you’d think this film would be fantastic. Guess again. Pink Panther 2 is stale and never engaging. The jokes, mostly slapstick, are seldom very amusing. All the characters are stereotyped, text book caricatures. It seems that a handful of comedy skits were simply glued together by a really straight forward story: the team moves from point A to point B trying to find the jewel. Although I didn’t embrace the film, there was some laughter in the theater so maybe
this one just didn’t connect with me. Although there is some innuendo, Pink Panther 2 may be a good film for older kids as it plays out almost like a cartoon.

He’s Just Not That Into You

The new film, based on the best selling book, explores the relationships between a group of intertwined thirty something professionals. The film presents several storylines; a couple trying to stay committed in a marriage, a woman hoping her 7 year boyfriend will enter into a marriage, and everyone else is just trying to find special someone. Text messaging, My Space, Facebook and the all the new technological avenues of communication are addressed here so the movie feels more relevant and contemporary. Characters make mistakes and walk into situations that are going to be awkward, but that’s all part of the journey. “He’s Just Not That Into You” brings together a wonderful cast including Jennifer Connelly, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Ginnifer Goodwin - you get the picture. The film gets the audience invested in the characters early which really keeps the story moving nicely. There are a lot of funny, touching
moments to enjoy. It’s predictable in many ways, but there are plenty of unexpected moments to keep it fresh. “He’s Just Not That Into You” skews towards the female demographic, but that’s not to say that guys won’t enjoy it. If you’re an action film fan, you may want to let your wife or girlfriend see the film with her friends. For everyone else, it’s entertaining.

FANBOYS

Fanboys is a new comedy from director, Kyle Newman.

Linus and Eric, two old friends and avid Star Wars fans, have grown apart over the last few years. By a chance encounter, they are reunited. Sadly, Eric discovers that Linus is dying. The year is 1998. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace will soon be released. For one last adventure, Eric, Linus and two of their closest childhood friends travel across country to Skywalker Ranch to steal an unreleased print of the upcoming film. Along the way, the four friends encounter their fair share of mishaps, delays, and crazy characters. They even have a heated rivalry with another faction of sci-fi fans: the Trekkies, a group obsessed with the Star Trek films. Newman gives audiences plenty of inside jokes and references to laugh at. Actor, Dan Fogler, turns in a inspired performance as one of the overly enthusiastic friends .There are also a lot of exciting cameos by Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, William Shatner, and the list goes on. Although Fanboys has heart,
it falls a little short of being a great film. It tends to drag in points and some jokes fall flat. There just seems to be something missing. I’m a Star Wars fan so I found enough to enjoy, but if you’re not, this movie is definitely hit or miss.

“New in Town” is the romantic comedy starring Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr.

Zellweger stars as Lucy Hill, a Miami corporate consultant assigned to the task of restructuring a Minnesota food processing plant. Unfortunately, this assignment will result in lay-offs. Enter the local union representative, Ted Mitchell, played by Harry Connick Jr. As you can imagine, these two develop a heated relationship both on and off the job.

This is a genre film which means it’s pretty predictable; there aren’t any ground breaking story-lines or surprise endings. For the most part, “New in Town” sticks to the formula. That’s not a bad thing. The film is fun, cute and mostly importantly, entertaining. It’s good to see Academy Award winner, Renée Zellweger, return to slapstick, situational comedy. Many critics have described her performance as "flat" and “phoned in”, but I disagree. I think Zellweger is having fun. And watching her have fun is a good time for the audience.

The film has more to offer than just a rehashed love story: it’s also about a town fighting for its livelihood, trying to keep their plant open; it’s about a widowed father (Harry Connick Jr.) trying to deal with the fact that his little girl is becoming a woman. Throw is some pratfalls, a scene stealing performance by Siobhan Fallon as Blanche, and you’ve got an entertaining movie. Sure, some guys won’t like this “chic” flick, but I think everyone can enjoy it.

"Taken", a new action thriller opens in theaters this weekend.

The story follows Bryan Mills, an ex-CIA operative, who has made a successful career out of traveling the world and making bad guys disappear. Of course, being fully committed to his job and his country, Bryan was never able to fully commit to his wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen) and his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace).
Now, years later, he’s re-prioritized his life; he’s quit the business and dedicated himself to rebuilding a relationship with his daughter. As for his wife, it’s too late; she’s remarried and not very forgiving. Bryan’s plan has only one problem: when his daughter goes to Paris for vacation, she’s kidnapped by Albanian slave traders. And that’s not a good thing for the bad guys because Bryan takes his new found commitment to his daughter very seriously. In fact, he growls at the kidnapper, “I’ll will look for you. I will find you. I will kill you”. By the way, Bryan is a man of his word. The film is predictable, and there were a few minor issues I had, but I still really enjoyed it. It’s a straight up revenge story about a man driven to save his daughter. It’s very entertaining watching the bad guys getting what they have coming to them, especially, when it’s Liam Neeson dishing out the punishment. Neeson, an extremely talent
actor, brings extra depth to the character and is a pleasure to watch. There’s plenty of action and some memorable one liners. If you're headed to see this film, you won’t be disappointed.

It's both hysterical and heart breaking, and is not to be missed.

My Bloody Valentine 3D

Like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “The Fog”, and even “Friday the 13th” (in theaters next month), “My Bloody Valentine 3D” is a remake of a horror classic. I will admit that I am a horror film fan; I have looked forward to all these remakes, even if I didn’t think a remake was in order. Honestly, most of them were disappointing. They may have looked and sounded better, but nothing really made them stand out. This movie is different.

“Valentine” takes place in Harmony, a quiet mining town haunted by a dark past. Tom Hanniger accidentally causes a cave-in at the mine, leaving several miners dead and one survivor, Harry Warden, in a coma. One Valentine’s Day, Harry Warden awakens and goes on a brutal killing spree; his rampage ends with his supposed death. Now, ten years later, Hanniger returns to town looking for closure; he also hopes to make amends with his ex-girlfriend, Sarah; she is now married to his best friend, Axel. And there’s just one more thing; the murders have stated again. The film stars Jamie King, Jensen Ackles, and Kerr Smith.

Now, you have to realize that a film like this doesn’t look to redefine cinema or reinvent a genre that's been around for quite some time. If you aren't a horror film fan or a movie-goer that enjoys a little scare, I wouldn’t recommend this film. For those that enjoy this particular flavor, you won’t be disappointed. “Valentine” pays homage to the original by recreating some of the very memorable scenes, but the film also takes the original story, about a love triangle and a murderer on the loose, to new levels. It expands those storylines, fleshes them out and even beefs up some character’s back stories. These new details make the story fuller. They add a little something extra. And even better, ‘Valentine” still has the feel of an 80’s classic: nudity, gore and good suspense all make the film fun.

Who is killing the people in this peaceful community? Harry Warden? Is it someone else? “Valentine” isn’t just a slasher film, it’s a whodunit. Guessing who is behind the murders makes this movie even more enjoyable. And by the way, as the title reveals, this films is in 3D which adds a nice layer to the experience. It gives mine shafts a little more depth. It gets you more involved in the action. According to star, Jamie King, it’s not “like your old school 3D with your red and blue glasses where it’s just random things flying at you. Literally, the whole film is bigger than. Larger than life so you’re really in the film and with the characters”. Sound like fun? Now, throw in a little camp and a cliché or two and you’ve got a really good time.

Hotel for Dogs

“Hotel for Dogs” is the new family film from Paramount Studios and Nickelodeon films. Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin star as Andi and Bruce, two foster children, a brother and sister, trying to find a real family. Currently, they live with Lois and Carl Scudder (Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillion); two goofy, not so loving wannabe musicians. The only true companionship the children share is with each other and their trusty dog, Friday. In their quest to find a real family, they start building one of their own, by turning an abandoned hotel into a home for all the city's stray dogs.

I’ll admit I wasn’t necessarily excited to see the film, I thought it would be entertaining, but probably predictable, cheesy and sappy. And it was predictable, cheesy, and sappy. And you know what? That’s not a bad thing. In fact, I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The cast is solid: Roberts and Austin and co-stars like Kevin Dillon, Lisa Kudrow and Don Cheadle are fun to watch. They all seem to be having a good time which translates into a good time for the audience. Cheadle is great as always; he grounds the film. But I can‘t forget to mention all the canine co-stars. The producers cast such lively dogs; all of them have unique and charming personalities. Sure, the film is fun, but it also has a heart. The story is about family and staying together no matter what. If you’re looking for a movie that is utterly fresh and innovative, this isn’t it. But if you want to enjoy an afternoon with the entire family, this is the
perfect movie.

Definace

“Defiance” is the new drama from acclaimed director, Edward Zwick; you may remember some of his other films like “Glory”, “Last Samurai”, and “Blood Diamond”. Defiance is based on the true WWII story of the Bielskis, three Jewish brothers, who organize a refuge in a remote Russian forest; they plan to project Jews trying to escape persecution. They build a community and form a resistance, but most importantly, they strive to live the best life possible in their situation. The film follows the brothers and how they grow apart and come together dealing with personal decisions they must face.
The film stars Liev Schreiber and Daniel Craig.

This story actually didn’t come to light until the late 80’s, when two of the brothers started sharing their past experiences. Before the story was presented to Zwick, he never thought he’d explore such a topic. Zwick says, “initially, my own reluctance had you told me that I was going to do something on the Holocaust would have been: what more could one add on this subject that these great historians and philosophers had contributed everything. And yet, here there was something to talk about because it flew in the face of that conventional wisdom and added complexity to the portrait”. This true story is fascinating. Zwick lets it unfold in a straight forward way, but he keeps the audience always engaged. He does a great job of painting a vivid portrait of the conditions that had to be endured: cold, harsh winters, the struggle to find food. He really draws the audience is. The film is well acted, well directed. It’s definitely worth
seeing.

Notorius

“Notorious” chronicles the life of Christopher “Biggie” Wallace, better known as "Notorious B.I.G.", the popular rap artist whose music still resonates with fans, even after his untimely death over a decade ago. The story starts with Wallace as a boy and follows him as he grows into man whose determination and talent make him one of the greatest rappers of all time. Along the way, he fosters relationships with other music personalities like Sean “Puffy” Combs, Tupac Shakur , Faith Evans, and Lil Kim. The film has strong performances from Angela Bassett, Derek Luke, Naturi Naughton, Jamal Woolard, and Antonique Smith.

The film is straightforward, but the story itself is very interesting. For some people, what they learned about the life of this rapper came only from headlines and news reports. As Jamal Woolard, the actor who plays Wallace, says, “there’s a lot I didn’t know…a lot I didn’t know about Christopher. You know what I’m saying. As far as "Biggie" and "Notorious", I mean, the media gave us a whole story about him so…but knowing the man. Wow. I didn’t know that. I didn’t know that. You know, just looking at it, you relate to him. You relate to him. He's just like me. We’re all trying to get there to the top. We’ve all got dreams.”
You don’t have to be a fan of rap to enjoy this move, because it’s not about just music, it about one man’s journey.

Thanks to all The Drive listeners that came out Friday night to the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa for the first Inaugural Obama-Haha! The show was a great success and we thank everyone for coming out and supporting comedy in Sonoma County. Here is a recap of all the action (click on the photos to enlarge):

Steve Jaxon kicked off the show by welcoming Sonoma County to the Last Day Saloon for a great night of comedy and introduced the Drive crew.

The youngest of the group, Joe Klocek, was up first.

The host of the event and Drive regular, Dan St. Paul joined Dick Bright and his inaugural band in song before going into his set.

Johnny Steele was up next, bringing down the house and even included some of the jokes that he put together as he co-hosted The Drive earlier in the afternoon!

The crowd welcomes the great Will Durst to the stage!

Will Durst brought his unique wit and wisdom and delivered political satire like only he can.

The Wrestler

Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei star in Darren Aronofsky's new film, "The Wrestler".
Rourke plays Randy "The Ram" Robinson, one of the most popular professional wrestlers of his time. He's got his own action figure; he appears in a video game. The film starts twenty years after the pinnacle of his success. He's an older, broken down version of his former self, but he's still hungry for glory; in fact, he continues to wrestle in small, less than spectacular promotions. As the movie unfolds, circumstances face him with new challenges in life. He must reevaluate the decisions he has made and ultimately, identify what is most important to him. Aronofsky creates a very gritty world and pulls his audience right into it. Professional wrestling fan or not, anyone will connect with the story and the characters. The performances by Tomei and specifically, Rourke are fantastic. Rourke's acting is very worthy of all the current praise. The film is a great character driven story that lets you meet a man who's not in the best place in his life, and
then follow him as he makes amends, makes mistakes, and makes a us care.

Gran Torino

Clint Eastwood produces, directs and acts in the new film, Gran Torino.
Eastwood plays Walt Kowalski, a Korean War veteran who has no problem voicing his opinion. He tells it the way he sees it; he doesn't change that for anyone. As a widower, he lives alone. He isn't exactly the warmest person. One night, Thao, the boy next door, tries to steal Walt's prize possession, his 1972 Gran Torino. The story changes gears as the two forge an unique relationship that changes them both. Considering his past films, it's no surprise that Eastwood can make a good movie, and even more importantly, tell a good story. He does both here again. He takes his time introducing us to his characters; he lets us really connect with them. At that point, he mixes things up, and the story takes you places you might not expect. The film is touching and engaging. Eastwood turns in a great performance.

The Drive Movie Reviews 12-5 Plus Ray Stevenson Interview!

Here are this weeks reviews from Drive "movie guy" Chris Bollini:

The new film, Punisher: War Zone may be another comic book adaption, but it’s definitely not about a superhero. The story follows Frank Castle (Ray Stevenson), an ex-marine whose family is murdered by the mafia; he becomes a vigilante driven by revenge.

The film begins with a bang…literally: a massive shootout gets the story rolling. The film has promise that it might give audiences a deeper look at a grieving, tormented man, so consumed with revenge that he has to struggle to keep from being overtaken by it. Unfortunately, the promise isn’t fully realized; the film only touches upon a few character revelations; it seems to dispense with them quickly in favor of more gunfights and explosions. That's not a horrible thing, but a better balance between the characters and the carnage would have been nice. Having said all that that, there are high levels of violence: heads explode, limbs are blown off, and chair legs are jammed through skulls. At least, the scenes seem to be a fresh approach to the standard action scenes in other films like Transporter 3. Further more, the tone of the film seems to flip fop between a dark and violent to comic and campy. Several scenes play out to be comical. Although
that may have been the filmmaker’s intention, the two different tones didn’t seem to reconcile very well with each other. At least not for me. This film is made for a certain audience; it’s made for the action starved masses looking for a little break for the current string of Oscar films. These fans will be pleased. There are a few good one liners and some grandiose scenes of violence to keep you involved. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.

Here is Chris Bollini's interview with Ray Stevenson

Base on a true story, Cadillac Records chronicles the rise and evolution of a Chess records, a record label based in 1950’s Chicago. The film follows many story lines but centers mostly around businessman, Leonard Chess (Adrian Broody) and musician, Muddy Waters (Jeffery Wright). These two put the new music company on the map. Along the way, Chess’s business sense and intuition lead him to foster the careers of music greats: Etta James (Beyonce Knowles). Little Walter (Columbus Short) and Chuck Berry (Mos Def).

Learning about how all these different lives intersect and about this little slice of music history was fascinating. At the same time, the film seemed to be jammed packed with so many chronological events on a timeline; it seemed to compromise the impact of some of some of the emotional moments of the characters. Overall, it was engaging even when it felt slow at times.
Of note, is a solid performance from Jeffery Wright. (You may recognize him as Felix Lighter from Quantum of Solace, the new James bond film.)

Personally, I found very interesting, but there was something missing.
